Thanks to Werner for packaging it up. We just need to get an announcement out and fix the webpages. I also like to fix NEWS.last to include a hint towards the changes: a) Has the Compendium 3.0.0 now! b) We've tried to reduce the chances that Gpg4win2 hangs, by the following changes: * src/inst-pinentry.nsi: Set pinentry-gtk as default. * patches/gpgme-1.2.0/05-is-socket.patch: New. Both are temporary solutions until we have a full solution. Still it is a good thing to have a better working release. Does somebody feel like helping with the webpages? Message-ID: <1276602600.19697.17.camel@drew-northup.unet.maine.edu> Hi, I'm back again to be a thorn in everyones' sides (or I suppose "in everyone's side" if we want to use the collective construction) and ask again what the current timeline on English translation of the documentation. I don't much mind the Google translate version myself (and sometimes find it quite funny), but I can't ask non-IT workers in our organization to use that. (Besides, Google doesn't provide a clear answer--from my perspective--as to the license questions of using that engine to build a translated document for the project, so I am left waiting.) Of highest priority from my perspective would be anything not in the old novice guide (which was translated already) in particular any discussion of file encryption (there isn't much, and should probably be more) and the use of the graphical front-end to establish both public and private keys as well as to exchange public keys. I think that once the high priority ("What is this thing?" and "How do I properly get it set up to work for me?") questions are answerable then nuance can be covered. That would allow IT people that I work with to evaluate the steps needed to more forward better. -- ---------------------------------+-------------------------------------- Drew Northup | Technical Support Specialist University of Maine System | Drew.Northup at Maine.edu Computing Center | phone: (207) 561-3513 Orono, ME 04469 | fax: (207) 561-3531 From bernhard at intevation.de Tue Jun 15 16:45:51 2010 From: bernhard at intevation.de (Bernhard Reiter) Date: Tue, 15 Jun 2010 16:45:51 +0200 Subject: [Gpg4win-devel] Compendium Screenshots broken Message-ID: <201006151645.52826.bernhard@intevation.de> In my browser some screenshots in the compendium are broken: They should not be scaled, but original 1-to-1 pixel images. e.g. see http://gpg4win.de/doc/gpg4win-compendium-de_12.html -- Managing Director - Owner: www.intevation.net (Free Software Company) Deputy Coordinator Germany: fsfe.org. It's not a matter or opinions. "Certificate" is a well-known term: From Wikipedia: In cryptography, a public key certificate (also known as a digital certificate or identity certificate) is an electronic document which uses a digital signature to bind together a public key with an identity ? information such as the name of a person or an organisation, their address, and so forth. The certificate can be used to verify that a public key belongs to an individual. So: a certificate binds the identity of a user to his public key. It is not the public key, and it certainly isn't the secret one, either. Therefore, "secret certificate" is nonsensical. There simply _is_ no such thing. And "public certificate" just misleads the user into thinking that there is a secret one, too. We said we wanted to use "certificate" instead of "key" since that's what the user is usually dealing with (even in OpenPGP, that's why we adopted the more precise term from S/MIME terminology for OpenPGP "keys", too). We (well, I) never intended to make a sweep s/key/certificate/ replacement, because that would be just introducing a wrong word for a murky one, in a lot of places. But that's exactly what seems to have happened here. For gpgsm to be able to use certificates, you need to have the full validated chain of certificates. [Second edition] Especially for the root certificate, the person administrating the machines (e.g. you) must ensure four conditions are given. (Paths examples are for GNU systems, the paths will be different for Mac OS or Windows.) a) You need to have the root certificate and be sure that the file you have is really the root certificate you would like to trust. You need to do this best at installation time, because later - in the heat of the moment - users will go along with everthing unchecked just to get the task done. b.1) Make sure dirmngr trusts the root certificate. info dirmngr Installation konqueror info:/dirmngr/Installation http://gnupg.org/documentation/manuals/dirmngr/Installation.html In short, recommended is to use the system dirmngr, place the root certification file in .der format in /etc/dirmngr/trusted-certs and restart the dirmngr service. b.2) Current revocation status information must be available. gpgsm will ask dirmngr to validate each certificate. As administrator you need to make sure that dirmngr can do that check. Usually certificates contain information where to get the revocation list via http or ldap. So dirmngr should be able to do http and ldap calls to the internet. Secure connections are not necessary as revocation info is already signed. You can tune dirmngr to use proxies or always ask specific servers via ldap. There are a number of other ways, like OCSP, to get revocation information. Too much to list them here. With sane certificate authorities and network settings it will just work with the revocation lists out of the box. If you need to trouble shoot, you can turn off checking of revocation information for a moment to verify that this is the problem. Leaving this off for production will degrade security significantly. Users should have "prefer-system-dirmngr" in their local gpgsm.conf (Usually ~/.gnupg/gpgsm.conf). So that the system dirmngr is asked all the time. c) Make sure gpg-agent trusts the root certificate Recommended way is to do this system wide: c.1) Place the right line in /etc/gnupg/trustlist.txt References: Existence of configuration file: info gnupg2 Installation konqueror info:/gnupg2/Installation http://gnupg.org/documentation/manuals/gnupg/Installation.html Format of trustlist.txt: info gnupg2 "Invoking GPG-AGENT" "Agent Configuration" konqueror info:/gnupg2/Agent Configuration http://gnupg.org/documentation/manuals/gnupg/Agent-Configuration.html c.2) Make sure all users have "include-default" in their personal trustlist.txt.
