In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: <8C862F7ED7B64330AAE34F57BF2A4613@agiusa.com> Since I did not get a reply to this I went ahead and uninstalled my old Gpg4Win 1.0.8 and installed the latest 2.0.0 instead. It works kind of strange with my Outlook 2003, though. If I write a message in Rich Text format I cannot send it, there is a dialog popping up. But if I change the format to HTML it is accepted. But when I receive the message and decrypt it, it is displayed *without* any of the HTML formatting I put into it but still is shown as a *Rich Text* message (in the title bar) even though there is no formatting at all left.... What kind of settings do I need to configure in order for the HTML formatting to be preserved? (bold text, font size, color) I will have a hard time convincing my co-workers of using Gpg4Win if all they can send are plain text messages with no formatting! Maybe we should switch to Thunderbird and Enigmail instead, then at least the HTML formatting is preserved..... Please advice. Hello, I have an old installation og GPG4Win on my PC (version 1.0.8 from 2006) I have not used it all that much because I use Outlook 2003 and I had trouble gettingh it to work properly and convice my contacts to also use it. Now I see that version 2.0 has been released so I guess that there are a lot of improvements, right? If I want to test the new one, how do I upgrade? Do I have to uninstall, then reboot my WinXP PC etc, before starting th install of 2.0 or is it simpler than that??? Please advice. I had big problems inside Outlook and finally had to uninstall it completely. Instead I downloaded GnuPG 1.4.9 from the GPG site and installed it and got Enigmail to work with Thunderbird 2. But it also refused to handle the HTML formatted emails. Which is kind of strange because HTML is just a text based format in the first place. Why would it not work? Now I wonder what will happen if I try to re-install gpg4win 1.0.8? Will it overwrite GPG 1.4.9 with some older version or will it put a different GPG version side-by-side so Enigmail will still work? If it overwrites the newer GPG with an older one, will that destroy my keyrings and other infrastructure? I use Outlook for my email and I can't switch to Thunderbird since OL is auto downloading all my email every 10 minutes. So I really want encryption in Outlook. Of course most over zealous servers or clients will reject as "suspicious." Are you encrypting with ASCII Armoured format or regular? I suspect one reason it will not sign HTML mail (I could be wrong) is that there are post-configuration action that take place when you queue or send the email (the email is post-processed to incorporate the html coding) which would make encrypting the email impossible. At least, I did experience this some year ago with another email client. > > Now I wonder what will happen if I try to re-install gpg4win 1.0.8? > Will it overwrite GPG 1.4.9 with some older version or will it put a > different GPG version side-by-side so Enigmail will still work? Of course you can switch. Either deactivate the auto-download or configure the email to remain on the server and use Thunderbird to fully download. Or just stop using OL. Another alternative for you to consider is install a GPG/PGP program that allows you to sign/encrypt directly into your email. This would also resolve your html issues above. It is not efficient as it is manual but it works. I am using UBUNTU for my OS but also run Windows XP. I use PGP Desktop VS 9 on Windows for just that purpose. I find it quite useful for encrypting the contents of text files, doc files etc. And it has hot keys (CTRL-SHIFT-E for encrypt for example) that speed things up. But when I started Outlook sometimes there was a message box telling me it could not start because some service was not running. And since I could not get around the richtext/html encryption I wanted I uninstalled gpg4win 2.0.0 and then Outlook was back at the old way of behaviour. I have had gpg4win 1.0.8 installed on this PC for several years (but not used it) without any such problems. Now I have downloaded the last GPG1 gpg4win version (1.4.1) and installed it and I have Outlook integration (for plaintext messages). Lets see what happens when I start communicating with my co-workers across the ocean. They installed gpg4win 2.0.0 and they have MS Office 2007 instead of 2003 like I have. What does "not work with Exchange" mean? Is the type of mail server important? I would have believed that the mail *client* was all that mattered. I am a remote user and I connect via POP3 to an Exchange mail server to download my mail (nothing stays on the server), whereas the co-workers are users on the same LAN as the Exchange server and use Outlook in the "viewer" mode where all mail stays on the server. This is just the sending side. When coupled with Exchange, Outlook uses different code to transfer the message which will subsequently be send via Exchange (as far as I have understood the situation). For email transportation it does not matter, as long as the email gets transported correctly. > I am a remote user and I connect via POP3 to an Exchange mail server to > download my mail (nothing stays on the server), whereas the co-workers > are users on the same LAN as the Exchange server and use Outlook in the > "viewer" mode where all mail stays on the server. > Will this make a problem? I guess you coworkers cannot send out encrypted/signed emails with Gpg4win 2.0.0 (or 2.0.1rc1). Let them try and report, it would be a suprise if it works though, given they are really using Outlook+Exchange. So I clicked the sign button and then adjusted the text and sent it off. ==> It was sent unsigned!!!!!! I belive that this is a very serious bug in GPGol, since if one is sending sensitive information and need the encryption and it is not done then the result may be catastrophic!!!! It seems like the buttons in Outlook that GPGol uses have to be clicked exactly *before* the Outlook Send button to have any impact at all on the message being sent. This is very easy to overlook. In my case I clicked the button and then made some last adjustment to the text before sending. The button was still marked as active, but it clearly did not work. Am I using Outlook/GPGol erroneously or is this a known bug? I am running gpg4win 1.4.1 and Outlook 2003. In *both* cases it briought up the dialog for me to enter my passphrase and select the key to sign with, though. And this happens at the time I click the Send button both directly and after I have added some more text. I do not believe GPGol signs the message at the time the Sign button is clicked, that just sets a flag. The real signing is part of the sending procedure as witnessed by it displaying the keyselect and passphrase dialog only after clicking Send. There must be something else going on. Just a minute ago I found another peculiarity: I wanted to encrypt a file as an example for my co-workers so in Windows Explorer I rightclicked the file and selected the pop-up menu item "GPGee/Encrypt(PK)" command. At this time I expected to get a dialog asking for the keys to use for encryption but exactly *nothing* happened! What does this mean? Is that not the way to encrypt standalone files? -- Bo Berglund From bo.berglund at telia.com Sun Sep 13 10:56:20 2009 From: bo.berglund at telia.com (Bo Berglund) Date: Sun, 13 Sep 2009 10:56:20 +0200 Subject: [Gpg4win-users-en] Totally insane - gpg4win GPGol won't encrypt or sign! Message-ID: I am now getting close to the cliff.... In order to get a firm ground to check the workings of gpg4win I again uninstalled everything I had previously installed concerning GPG. Then I also rebooted my XP-Pro PC and tried to erase the GnuPG directory in preparation for a new install. First problem: -------------- Windows would *not* let me erase the directory because there was a dll active out of this dir (pcre.dll)! I have no idea which process on my PC could have loaded this dll since all GPG related stuff was uninstalled and I had not started any program yet (except for Windows Explorer). So I figured I would install gpg4win 1.4.1 anyway since it probably wants to use this dll too... After installation I am now able to use GPGee from the Windows Explorer context menu to decrypt and encrypt files on my disk. This was not possible before the uninstall/install cycle. Next problems: ------------- But now Outlook 2003 is even more weird in its ways.... 1) If I write a message and set it to be encrypted (plaintext of course) then GPGol (I assume) shows a dialog box when I click the Send button. In this dialog box I am requested to select the keys to be used for encryption. So I do this and continue. ==> The outgoing message is sent *without* encryption in clear text! 2) If I again make a test message (plain text) and set it to be signed then GPGol shows a dialog asking me for the signing key and passphrase. Then it sends the message *unsigned*! Enigmail test ============= Since I have Enigmail installed on this computer as well (I use Thunderbird for one of my mail accounts) I made two test messages in TB where I signed one and encrypted one. ==> BOTH of these were properly handled!!! Since I have only one instance of GPG installed on my PC Enigmail for Thunderbird managed to use this and sign/encrypt as directed whereas GPGol for Outlook 2003 fails miserably at this. :-( So the end result is that it looks like there is something broken with GPGol and I am now at wits end as to how I can debug this problem. All help welcome! I really need this GPG to be integrated in Outlook 2003 since this is where all of my normal mail is handled and I cannot easily change since I have many many many thousands of archived messages in Outlook that I need access to. As far as I remember there is no convenience function for this. I guess one of the reasons is that often, keys are exchanged via key servers. Other reasons might be in the technical difficulties implementing this, but I am not sure. Have you checked this with Gpg4win 2.0.1rc1? There are a couple of issues with the old GpgOL, this is why a new one was written and shipped with Gpg4win2. In general doing a plugin that helps Outlook to become a good email application is really hard from the technological side. There are some things you just cannot do from within a plugin, e.g. see this post about some development details: http://lists.wald.intevation.org/pipermail/gpg4win-devel/2009-February/000827.html We are glad that Werner Koch from g10code was able to at least get GpgOL to the point where it now is. :) Best Regards, Bernhard -- Managing Director - Owner: www.intevation.net (Free Software Company) Germany Coordinator: fsfeurope.org. (Often without involving Gpg4win at all). To be really, really clean you possibly would need to reinstall windows. :( For Gpg4win it is good to try to use the regular de-installation for each version before you are installing a new one. > First problem: > -------------- > Windows would *not* let me erase the directory because there was > a dll active out of this dir (pcre.dll)! > I have no idea which process on my PC could have loaded this dll > since all GPG related stuff was uninstalled and I had not started > any program yet (except for Windows Explorer). You will have a backup as a sane IT-person, which is good. If you were okay with a different product like TB, Claws or Kontact, which is Free Software, personally I would recommend you look into migrating your email archive to a non-proprietary format. Two methods: Copy pinentry.exe over or use the right gpg-agent.conf as you did in your other email. > How can I got secure memory on my system ? I think you cannot. This is a property of the operating system. Background: GnuPG runs on several operating systems. Secure memory usually means that the memory will not get swapped to disc and maybe is harder to read by other processes, I am not entirely sure. GnuPG will have to pull some tricks to make this possible, usually. So currently I believe this is not possible on windows. If we knew the right tricks, maybe it will be in the future. Note that the windows platform has other security issues, so fixing this particular issue might not help much. Just ignore this warning for now. Can you install something like "DebugView" and start kleopatra on the command line and see if you can extract something useful? This should all lead to a nice qualified report so developers can think about how to fix the issue. > But in 'GNU Privacy Assistant - Key > Manager', I can seed my secret key. You need an ui server and a certificate manager to run crypto in Gpg4win2. If Kleopatra does not work for you, maybe GPA does. Manually start GPA before running Outlook or anything else and then try GpgOL. > If I enable 'Sign new message by default', when I click 'send mail', > no action occur. That is a problem following out of the unavailability of a crpyto-ui-server. Again thanks for your feedback, as you can imagine we do not have all versions of windows in the different languages like Japanese, Chinese or Hangul, so help fixing those problems is really appreciated. I've installed Gpg4win 2.0.0 and I have found some issues. I use a Lenovo ThinkPad T400, WXP SP 3: * The spanish installer displays a wrong message if version 1.1.4 is already installed. The installer says: "Una versi?n de Gpg4Win ya se encuentra instalada en este sistema. No habr? problema si instala y por ende, sobreescribe esta versi?n. ?Desea continuar con la instalaci?n?" That is: "A version of Gpg4Win is already installed in this system. There will be no problem if you install and therefore overwrite this version. Do you want to continue?" This is wrong. The english installer says: "An old version 1.1.4 has already been installed. It is strongly recommended to deinstall previous versions on major upgrades. Do you want to continue installing Gpg4win 2.0.0 anyway?" Then the right translation may be: "Una versi?n anterior 1.1.4 ya se encuentra instalada en este sistema. Recomendamos muy especialmente desinstalar las versiones anteriores cuando se trata de actualizaciones importantes. ?Quiere continuar de todas formas la instalaci?n de Gpg4win 2.0.0?" * Windows Explorer hangs when I try to decrypt or encrypt a file with GpgEX right click. I need to terminate the Explorer window and then I can see the dialog for encrypt/decrypt (Kleopatra). This is a little problem because only occurs the first time I use GpgEX. The next times all is OK. But if I shutdown Kleopatra, the next time I use GpgEX the problem recurs (only the first time). * Another problem is that Kleopatra (and gpg.exe on command line too) can't decipher files symmetricaly encrypted with GpgEE (with Gpg4win 1.1.4) when the password contains accented characters. For example if I encrypt a file with the password "ma" with GpgEE Kleopatra can decipher it. But if I use "m?" Kleopatra can't decipher it. However if I open a DOS window and encrypt the file with the GPG command line included with Gpg4win 2.0.0 gpg -c [file] using the password "m?" then I can decipher it with Kleopatra or GpgEX. This is the main problem for me. I don't know if I am wrong using the software or there is a bug and I need to decipher my files with Gpg4win 1.1.4 and then encrypt with Gpg4win 2.0.0 using the same password. Thanks Jos?
