From Jan-Oliver.Wagner at greenbone.net Thu Oct 1 09:37:07 2009 From: Jan-Oliver.Wagner at greenbone.net (Jan-Oliver Wagner) Date: Thu, 1 Oct 2009 09:37:07 +0200 Subject: [Openvas-announce] Reminder: Support for module openvas-plugins version <= 1.0.3 to be discontinued Message-ID: <200910010937.14641.Jan-Oliver.Wagner@greenbone.net> Dear OpenVAS users, the OpenVAS module openvas-plugins version up to and including 1.0.3 has reached its end-of-life and the OpenVAS team plans to discontinue support for this release in 6 weeks from now at November, 17th, 2009. If you still use release openvas-plugins 1.0.3 or earlier, please drop a message via any of our support channels. If you can handle it yourself, you should soon upgrade to a newer version. Else, please ask for assistance for upgrading your OpenVAS installation. In case we receive feedback saying that upgrading the OpenVAS environment is not doable within 6 weeks, we are open to delay the retirement. Note for subscribers to Greenbone Security Feed (GSF): This discontinuation has no effect for GSF users. They don't need to react upon this announcement. Important: After retirement of the releases of openvas-plugins <= 1.0.3, the OpenVAS NVT Feed will be changed in terms of access rights. Any new release of openvas-plugins will handle this correctly and you will not notice any change. How to verify which version you are using: * If your OpenVAS installation is via Packages, check with your package managment system. * If you installed OpenVAS via source code packages: For the module openvas-plugins it is unfortunately not easy to identify the version that is installed. You should look into the plugins directory (defined in "/etc/openvas/openvasd.conf" as "plugins_folder") and check whether file "nmap_tcp_connect" is present. If yes, this means you at least once installed an old openvas-plugins release. In this case, even if you updated meanwhile, you should entirely clean the openvas-plugins directory and reinstall the newest openvas-plugins release and then run the sync routine for the NVT Feed. If you still use OpenVAS 1.0, please drop a message via any of our support channels. If you can handle it yourself, you should soon upgrade to a newer version. Else, please ask for assistance for upgrading your OpenVAS installation. In case we receive feedback saying that upgrading the OpenVAS environment is not doable within three months, we are open to delay the retirement. Note for subscribers to Greenbone Security Feed (GSF): This discontinuation has no effect for GSF users. They don't need to react upon this announcement. Important: After retirement of the OpenVAS 1.0, the OpenVAS NVT Feed will be changed in order to use the abilities of OpenVAS 2.0 such as subdirectories. How to verify which version you are using: * If your OpenVAS installation is via Packages, you may check with your package managment system. * Alternatively you may simple run the command openvasd --version in a command shell on the system where you installed OpenVAS. If you like to be a beta-tester you are very welcome and you should read this announcement very carefully. Major new features are: * New arrangement of modules and dependencies (see below on New Architecture) * IPv6 support * WMI clients support * Optional Extensions: New modules OpenVAS Manager and OpenVAS Administrator Apart from this, comprehensive internal cleanups happened and will be continued for the final 3.0.0 release. The APIs of the beta releases will undergo further modifications. Compatibility: The new OpenVAS Scanner remains compatible with the OpenVAS NVT Feed as well as with the Greenbone Security Feed. Also, it is possible to use the new OpenVAS Scanner with the OpenVAS-Client 2.0. OpenVAS Client 3.0 can connect to both concurrently, OpenVAS Scanner 3.0 and OpenVAS Server 2.0 and even connect to OpenVAS Manager via the new OpenVAS Management Protocol (OMP). New Architecture: OpenVAS 3.0 introduces a new architecture where openvas-libraries now includes openvas-libnasl as well as redundant code from openvas-client. The module openvas-server is renamed to openvas-scanner and includes any platform-dependent elements of openvas-plugins. As a result of this, the source code will shrink, though new features are added. Also, for running just the scanner only 2 modules are required (instead of 4 as for OpenVAS 2.0). Version 3.0 also prepares the upcoming OpenVAS Manager and OpenVAS Administrator as optional extension. This combination leverages the vulnerability scanner to a comprehensive vulnerability management solution. However, if you like to try out the beta version of the upcoming 3.0 release, you should install it separately from your 2.0 stable release. The OpenVAS team very much appreciates reports on any experiences with this first beta of the 3.0 series. Please report on the OpenVAS mailing lists. Download: All download links can be found on the OpenVAS homepage, see http://www.openvas.org . Of course, the OpenVAS 2.0 series will be further maintained by the OpenVAS team. Best regards (on behalf of the growing OpenVAS developer team that made this new generation of OpenVAS possible) Jan-Oliver Wagner -- Dr. Jan-Oliver Wagner | ++49-541-335084-0 | http://www.greenbone.net/ Greenbone Networks GmbH, Neuer Graben 17, 49074 Osnabr?ck AG Osnabr?ck, HR B 202460 | Gesch?ftsf?hrer: Lukas Grunwald, Dr. Jan-Oliver Wagner
