Bugs item #1112, was opened at 2009-09-02 13:25
Status: Open
Priority: 3
Submitted By: Geoff Galitz (geoff)

Summary: Use of /bin/sh results for shell scripts in erratic behavior on Ubuntu
Architecture: 64 Bit
Resolution: None
Severity: major
Version: v2.0.3
Component: openvas-server
Operating System: Linux
Product: OpenVAS
Hardware: None

Initial Comment:

On Ubuntu, the /bin/sh shell is linked to /bin/dash, rather than /bin/bash which is more the standard on Linux distributions.

OpenVAS shell scripts such as openvas-adduser run into problems in this scenario. Test operations frequently fail and execution of the script becomes erratic. Some still function, such as openvas-adduser, but others partially fail such as the client side LSC credential installation packages.

Specifically, there are many bashims which do not work in dash. More info on this can be found at:

The problem can be resolved on the sysadmin side of an Ubuntu solution by changing the default shell back to bash... but I'm not sure that is right solution.
