From Jan-Oliver.Wagner at greenbone.net Thu Jan 14 00:58:48 2010 From: Jan-Oliver.Wagner at greenbone.net (Jan-Oliver Wagner) Date: Thu, 14 Jan 2010 00:58:48 +0100 Subject: [Openvas-devel] Welcome to OpenVAS 2010 Message-ID: <201001140058.53490.Jan-Oliver.Wagner@greenbone.net> Hello OpenVAS developers, I hope you all arrived well in the year 2010. At least OpenVAS did for sure with the new 3.0 release ;-) So far no PR work was done as we waited for the early adopters first. I am not aware of any critical problem with 3.0 and it is even packaged for some platforms. This year will, again, being an exciting year for OpenVAS: The optional openvas-manager and gsa (pretty silently) reached beta phase this week. By summer of this year this should be a huge step forward for the whole tool chain -- as discussed on the DevCon 2009. The next generation of OpenVAS (4.0?) will undergo another set of fundamental changes and hoperfully be finished this year. Stripping it down to the essential task of scanning is a major goal. Also, I am thinking of a additional client, qt-based, only using OMP and thus very light and portable. I got a fully re-designed new OpenVAS homepage here. I still have to review it, and can put it online, perhaps step by step. The OpenVAS Feed likely will cross the number of 20.000 NVTs in 2010. Maybe we reach even 25.000. And finally of course, after the great success of OpenVAS DevCon 2009, we should have a OpenVAS DevCon 2010! The earlier we start discussion about the conference the better. Expectations, organisation, place and date are open for suggestions. Hmm...well, given my background, I really wouldn't mind an excuse to find my way back to Germany. (That's what you get for being such fantastic hosts last time around!) Date wise, I might lean towards a June timeframe when the kids are still in school - actually makes it a bit easier at my end. Just developers? > Some user oriented offers? Talks? Invited talks? I'd like to see some talks. Specifically I'd like to see how OpenVAS fits into the business cycle and product portfolios. I realize this may "secret sauce" to some companies but this can also generate venues for more collaboration. For example, OpenVAS is an integrated component of what we do. We combine it with other systems monitoring and inventory systems. Other developers on the team may have some interest in collaborating. I know one company that uses OpenVAS as part of their product QA system. These things are all interesting to me and all are potential opportunities. And more technical talks would be welcome too. A walk through on writing wrapper NASLs, for example. Just my two cents. -geoff --------------------------------- Geoff Galitz Blankenheim NRW, Germany http://www.galitz.org/ http://german-way.com/blog/ > -----Original Message----- > From: openvas-devel-bounces at wald.intevation.org [mailto:openvas-devel- > bounces at wald.intevation.org] On Behalf Of Jan-Oliver Wagner > Sent: Freitag, 15. Architecture: 32 Bit Resolution: None Severity: normal Version: v2.0.2 Component: openvas-client Operating System: Linux Product: OpenVAS Hardware: All URL: Initial Comment: Not certain at this stage, whether this is a bug, or merely something fundamental I have missed in the documentation, however, the same syntax worked nicely on an older version of openvas. To reproduce: * Create a password-authenticated user using openvas-adduser * echo "localhost" > /tmp/targetsystem * touch /tmp/OPENVASRC Copy a working openvasrc from a normal run from the openvas-client GUI * cp ~/.openvas/TASK/SCOPE/openvasrc /tmp/OPENVASRC) (where TASK and SCOPE are appropriate for your install) Now, attempt a batch-mode scan: * openvas-client -V -T xml -c /tmp/OPENVASRC -qx localhost 9390 USERNAME PASSWORD /tmp/targetsystem /tmp/output.xml The process will terminate fairly quickly, with the following line in /var/log/openvas/openvasd.messages: Stopping the whole test (requested by client) The OPENVASRC file will be overwritten by a new version. A hack to force openvas to work: * chown root: /tmp/OPENVASRC * chmod 444 /tmp/OPENVASRC * Run openvas as above, as a normal (non-root) user. An strace on that process indicates that openvas-client could not open /tmp/OPENVASRC in write-only mode, but the normal scan completes successfully. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: http://wald.intevation.org/tracker/?func=detail&atid=220&aid=1239&group_id=29 From openvas-bugs at wald.intevation.org Fri Jan 15 12:47:10 2010 From: openvas-bugs at wald.intevation.org (openvas-bugs@wald.intevation.org) Date: Fri, 15 Jan 2010 12:47:10 +0100 (CET) Subject: [Openvas-devel] =?utf-8?q?=5Bopenvas-Bugs=5D=5B1243=5D_scanner_an?= =?utf-8?q?d_libraries_can_not_be_configured_with_different_paths?= Message-ID: <20100115114710.AB8D1865F498@pyrosoma.intevation.org> Bugs item #1243, was opened at 2010-01-15 13:47 Status: Open Priority: 3 Submitted By: Aigars Jaund?lders (aigars) Assigned to: Nobody (None) Summary: scanner and libraries can not be configured with different paths Architecture: 32 Bit Resolution: None Severity: normal Version: v3.0.1 Component: openvas-scanner Operating System: Linux Product: OpenVAS Hardware: None URL: Initial Comment: If scanner and libraries are configured with different prefixes, make and make install succeed, but when openvassd is started, it exits after loading all plugins with message saying that openvas-services could not be found in path that is constructed from /var/lib/openvas/openvas-services instead of /var/lib/openvas/openvas-services where it actually resides. Architecture: None Resolution: None Severity: None Version: v3.0.0 Component: openvas-scanner Operating System: None Product: None Hardware: None URL: Initial Comment: Installing the plugins into %_libdir/openvas/plugins is plain wrong for several reasons - main ones are: 1. Stuff in %_libdir should get managed by the package management not some custom rsync scripts. 2. %_libdir is for architecture dependent stuff (e.g. 32 vs 64 bit) and afaik, correct me if I'm wrong, those plugins are not architecture dependent. IMHO the should be put either in: 1. %_datadir (/usr/share) which would at least fix the architecture problem but still that directory should get touched only by package management. 2. /var/tmp/openvas/plugins is IMHO the preferred solution. Not only would it fix the architecture question but also I see no problem managing its content by random scripts. So, to make it short: Please move the plugins from %_libdir/openvas/plugins to /var/tmp/openvas/plugins to comply with standard directory usage on linux / unix systems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: http://wald.intevation.org/tracker/?func=detail&atid=220&aid=1261&group_id=29 From matthew.mundell at intevation.de Sat Jan 23 19:11:30 2010 From: matthew.mundell at intevation.de (Matthew Mundell) Date: 23 Jan 2010 18:11:30 GMT Subject: [Openvas-devel] Welcome to OpenVAS 2010 In-Reply-To: Message of Fri, 15 Jan 2010 16:17:38 +0100. <21D4F3D10EEC43C8A4D73F3B59FB46D4@geoffPC> Message-ID: <20100123181129.ECDFCDEC35@mail.ukfsn.org> > > Of course we would be happy to host the conference once more. > > However, it depends a little on the scope. Talk on NASL development is also good. The focus this time should shift to NASL. Lot of work has been done for the 3.0 release, what goes into 4.0 should be the next discussion. A walkthrouh on 3.0 features would be good? This will help bring-in not just developers, others who are interested in OpenVAS or considering to use OpenVAS. We should come up with more user oriented content. Fixed. It is now quick merge of both scripts, so now we have best of both worlds (scripts). As it is very quick merge (that we don't have broken SVN trunk), I would recommend further testings. I will also check thorougly for bashism and style later this day.
