Initial Comment:
Hi there,

unfortunately I found little on the subject. It would appear OpenVAS has issues with gnutls, at least versions 3.3.8 and 3.3.9.

Found similar issues here: http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.security.openvas.users/6208

Reported bug at gentoo here: https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=525640

After building and trying to update openvasmd database I get error:

www ~ # openvasmd --rebuild --progress -v
Rebuilding NVT cache... failed.

www ~ # cat /var/log/openvas/openvasmd.log

lib serv:WARNING:2014-10-20 08h23.29 utc:20199: Failed to gnutls_bye: GnuTLS internal error.

This seems to be an incompatibility with gnutls.
