there is some documentation about the protocol in the source
code repository. But in fact you are saying to replace the current
protocol and base the new one on some standard protocol technology?
I am also a bit unhappy with the protocol because it has design weaknesses
like unsafe character escaping.

There was once a feature like this in Nessus, and AFAIR it is still in the
server side. Only the NessusClient removed it from the GUI options
because overall it caused more trouble than benefit.
I'd say this feature could be established through working on a more advanced
protocol and/or databse feature.
