But, hitting apply with simple text, just hangs the sklatex gui. If I control-c from the console from which skencil was started, the interrupt causes the sklatex to pop up and error window "External Application Error" It is creating tmp files in ~/.skLaTeX and the postscript is fine. I don't know what the problem might be--or how to diagnose it... I have pstoedit 3.44 gs is 8.56 pm2 1.2-1002 for py23, py24 and py25 Thanks for any advise! I don't know what the problem might be--or how to diagnose it..." This means that Latex and DVIPS are most likely OK. Thus the problem could be somewhere between pstoedit/ghostscript (assuming that DVIPS's PS output is OK). I do know from the past that some Latex/DVIPS output would choke pstoedit, but that was teTeX 1.0. Also some versions of pstoedit had problems, but not the version you are using (3.44). Have not idea about GS 8.5x (I have only tested GS 7.x and 8.1x.) I assume you are using teTeX 2.x or 3.0, which seem to work with pstoedit 3.44 (AFAIK). HERE'S HOW TO TROUBLE SHOOT: First test if all the dependencies apps are OK. Take the latex code you put in the sklatex editor and put it in a test file on your Mac box. Then test each stage sklatex takes to make a .sk file at the command line. Start here (you can use the name "test.tex"): 1. To test tetex: latex latexFileName This will produce a .dvi file (use xdvi to see if it is OK.) 2. To test DVIPS: dvips -q -f -E -D 600 -y 5000 -o psFileName dviFileName This will produce a .ps file (use GV or Ghostview to see if it is OK.) 3. To test pstoedit: pstoedit -f sk -dt -ssp psFileName skFileName This will produce a .sk file (use Skencil to see if it is OK. Note the image will be very large.) If you get error signs, at any stage, then that is most likely where the error is (assuming sklatex is fine.) If each stage goes right and the end .sk files can be read by Skencil, then it is a sklatex problem. Perhaps sklatex and python or PIL is the problem. I'll provide more help if this fails to get an answer. Note that I am working on a project, so I don't have sklatex or Skencil up on my new Sun development box. (Also for all in group, I have moved from SuSE to Ubuntu and thus no longer support the SuSE RPMs - for I don't have a single SuSE box around anymore. I will keep the current RPMS on the site.) Among other new features we demonstrated a "brilliant" feature - universal CDR importer for CorelDRAW files from 7 version up to X3 version. This importer is backward compartible with Skencil v.0.6.x and it's code can be found in our SVN on SF.net. CDR format reverse engineerig is a separate sK1 subproject (additional info can be found on our web site). Comparsion tests for complex drawing show that sK1 engine (based on Skencil engine but improved by Cairo renderer) is faster than Inkscape or Scribus engines and requires smaller memory amount (on the same drawing: sK1 - 60 Mb, Inkscape - 260 Mb, Scribus - 480 Mb) Also it was declared that unlike Sodipodi/Inkscape pair, sK1 team and Skencil team plan joining forces for 1.0 version. But the HOW_TO_INSTALL_en instructions point to a configure-script for sK1 which is not yet available - is that right? The sK1 project looks very promising judged by the screenshots available on the project page under http://sk1.sourceforge.net/screenshots/ and the progress seems to be quite considerable. Yes, it was right at last Friday, but now you can download and build sK1 from project SVN. Also new build scripts don't require root permissions and you can build sK1 in your home directory (default path is ~/sK1_Apps). Also sK1 code is updated for tk8.5a6 compartibility. One year ago I have reported that Skencil is not compartible with latest tcl/tk releases: http://lists.wald.intevation.org/pipermail/skencil-users/2006-May/000039.html Good to know! > http://sk1.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/sk1 Cdr importer (cdrloader.py) you can find on following link: http://sk1.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/sk1/trunk/sK1/src/app/plugins/Filters/ After small namespaces modification this filter can be used in Skencil. I had already put on some of the questions. > What name to use, and what strategy to pursue regarding > the now available three esisting ends skencil 0.6, sk1, skencil 0.7. > Then we need to find the best infrastructure for it. My suggestion is using "sK1" name for latest branch, because: 1. This code is highly differ from 0.6/0.7 versions 2. This code name is already announced as in Russian community and in west open source world. 3. This name is derived from Sketch 4. New name simplifies attracting new users. Unfortunately users choice first of all a modern UI and we often hear: "Skencil? Oh, it's an ugly Motif-style application. My choice is Inkscape/Xara/Karbon" So, even Skencil v1.0 will not attract quickly large user pool. The same "reanimation" problem is highly important for tcl/tk widgetset. Regarding strategy I think that all three branches should be alive. As far as I understand Skencil v0.6 engine is used in production, therefore this branch should be supported. I'm not familiar with pyGtk therefore I cannot evaluate Gtk-based v0.7 usability as a base for derived products, but it seems it can be used as whole product and a part of pyGtk-based applications. I cannot say that sK1 code can serve as reusable package, because sK1 primary goal is a mature vector graphics editor. Also sK1 code is still unperfect and requires further development. But even in current state sK1 can be presented as unique open source application for prepress. Only Scribus has similar features, but this application is not illustration program. So, my personal view of sK1 future is a competitor of CorelDRAW but on Linux platform. And future users pool should grow from former CorelDRAW users. Inkscape Team also declared that it's application is something like CorelDRAW or Illustrator, but on my opinion Inkscape is more similar to specialized editor like Macromedia Flash (at least on current development stage). We refactored svgloader.py to remove pyXML package dependency. As you known, pyXML is no longer maintained and last release was in 2004. Therefore pyXML has a bug in build script and produces corrupted package installation. To avoid these problems we substituted pyXML by built-in Python SAX parser. The source code you can find on following link: http://sk1.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/sk1/trunk/sK1/src/app/plugins/Filters/svgloader.py?view=log In current state (revision 207) refactored svgloader.py is fully compatible with Skencil 0.6.x. Later compatibility will be broken due to text engine UTF8 migration.
