thanks for trying. 
The first step of analysis is to find out if the S/MIME stuff
works on the command line with gpgsm. This allows you to find out if the 
problem is in the backend configuration or somewhere else. Usually it is 
in the configuration somewhere. ;)

So try
  gpgsm --sign hello.txt
and then
  gpgsm -vvv --debug-all hello.txt
